Bertrand | Sideboard by Massimo Iosa Ghini for MEMPHIS Srl
Massimo Iosa Ghini, 1987
Massimo Iosa Ghini was twenty-eight when he designed Bertrand for Memphis in 1987, a year after founding Bolidismo, the Bologna movement that took its cue from the streamlined cars and trains of the 1930s and the speed of the Italian Futurists. Bertrand is that idea made furniture: a ribbed grey body that sweeps back into a raked black frame, a fin rising from the top, the whole thing poised on splayed metal legs as if about to pull away.
Sideboard and vitrine in one: open shelves at one end, a stack of lilac drawers at its centre, a curved cabinet at the other. Painted wood and metal. Produced by Memphis in 2015 from the original 1987 design.
