About this piece
Shown at the first Memphis exhibition in Milan in September 1981, the Carlton became the emblem of the movement: a bookcase and room divider whose angled shelves splay out like arms, crowned by a small figure, and clad in the patterned plastic laminates Memphis turned into a language. Part furniture, part totem, it was designed to be looked at as much as used.
