Commissioned by Wendell Cherry for the Humana Building in Louisville, Kentucky, this dining suite was conceived as an expression of Michael Graves’s signature style. Cherry gave Graves full creative control, extending the architect’s vision for the building to the furniture within.
Made by Craftwood Products in bird’s-eye maple and briar, the dining table and six matching chairs bring together richly figured woods, clear geometry, and classical warmth. The contrasting grain patterns lend depth to the ensemble, while upholstered seats provide a softer counterpoint. It is furniture with an architectural presence and a sense of occasion, characteristic of Graves’s approach to the dining room.
