Hans Hollein's sofa of 1981 for Poltronova is built on opposites: soft upholstered cushions in wool against a frame of solid and veneered walnut, the curve of the back against the straight line of the base. Hard and soft, masculine and feminine, and named, fittingly, for a woman.
The Designer:
Hans Hollein (1934–2014) was one of the most influential European architects of his generation. He studied under Mies van der Rohe at the Illinois Institute of Technology, declared that "everything is architecture" in his manifesto Alles ist Architektur, and won the Pritzker Prize in 1985. Among his buildings are the Abteiberg Museum in Mönchengladbach and the Museum für Moderne Kunst in Frankfurt, nicknamed the "slice of cake" for its wedge-shaped plan.
